Heavy-duty idler arm designed to restore precise steering geometry on 1968–1974 Buick, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac models. This replacement idler arm secures the steering linkage, maintains proper alignment between the pitman arm and center link, and reduces play that causes wandering or uneven tire wear. Built from hardened steel with precision-machined surfaces and a greaseable bushing, it provides long-lasting reliability and improved steering feel for classic GM passenger cars and light trucks. Ideal for restoration projects and maintenance, this idler arm simplifies steering system repairs and helps return handling to factory specifications.
Features:
- Fits 1968-1974 Buick, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac models (select A-body and similar steering setups) — verify fitment with vehicle VIN or chassis before ordering.
- Constructed from hardened steel for strength and long service life under road stress.
- Precision-machined pivot and grease zerk for easy lubrication and reduced wear.
- Secures steering linkage to maintain proper alignment and reduce steering play.
- Easy direct-fit replacement for worn or loose factory idler arms—ideal for restorations.
- Helps prevent uneven tire wear and improves steering response and stability.
Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 2/5
- Estimated time: 30-60 minutes
Instructions:
- Park vehicle on level ground, chock rear wheels, and safely raise the front with a jack; support the vehicle on jack stands.
- Locate the idler arm on the frame rail connecting to the center link. Apply penetrating oil to mounting nuts and let soak if corroded.
- Remove the cotter pin (if applicable) and loosen the nut securing the idler arm to the center link using the appropriate socket or wrench.
- Use a pitman/idler arm puller or ball joint separator to separate the idler arm stud from the center link without damaging components.
- Unbolt the idler arm frame mounting nuts and remove the old idler arm from the vehicle.
- Position the new idler arm on the frame, install mounting bolts/nuts, and torque to the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications.
- Reconnect the idler arm stud to the center link, install the nut, tighten to spec, and secure with a new cotter pin if required.
- Grease the idler arm through the zerk fitting until fresh grease appears; if non-greaseable, ensure mounting points are clean and dry.
- Lower the vehicle, test-steer to check for proper operation, and perform a professional alignment if steering geometry was altered.
