Instructions:
- Park vehicle on level ground, set parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind rear wheels.
- Raise front of vehicle and support securely on jack stands; remove the front wheel on the side being serviced for better access.
- Locate the idler arm on the steering linkage and inspect mounting hardware and surrounding components.
- Apply penetrating oil to mounting bolts if they appear corroded; allow time to soak if necessary.
- Loosen and remove the nut securing the idler arm to the frame bracket and separate the idler arm from the steering linkage using a ball joint separator or pickle fork as needed.
- Remove the mounting bolts and take out the old idler arm assembly.
- Position the new idler arm in place and start the mounting bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten mounting bolts to the vehicle manufacturer’s specified torque values using a torque wrench.
- Attach the steering linkage to the idler arm and secure the nut; torque to spec.
- Lower the vehicle, reinstall the wheel, and torque lug nuts to specification.
- Test steering operation at low speed to verify smooth movement and correct function; have front-end alignment checked if recommended or if steering pull is noticed.
