Direct-fit idler arm designed for 1964–1966 Ford and Mercury vehicles with 8-cylinder engines, compatible with both power and manual steering systems. This replacement idler arm secures the steering linkage, maintains proper alignment and geometry, and helps prevent excessive play in the steering system. Built for durability and reliability, it restores steering responsiveness and reduces vibration and uneven tire wear. An ideal part for restoration projects or routine maintenance where safe, precise steering is required.

  • screwdriver or pry bar
  • ball joint separator or pickle fork (if needed)
  • penetrating oil (optional)
  • hammer (optional)
Instructions:
  1. Park vehicle on level ground, set parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind rear wheels.
  2. Raise front of vehicle and support securely on jack stands; remove the front wheel on the side being serviced for better access.
  3. Locate the idler arm on the steering linkage and inspect mounting hardware and surrounding components.
  4. Apply penetrating oil to mounting bolts if they appear corroded; allow time to soak if necessary.
  5. Loosen and remove the nut securing the idler arm to the frame bracket and separate the idler arm from the steering linkage using a ball joint separator or pickle fork as needed.
  6. Remove the mounting bolts and take out the old idler arm assembly.
  7. Position the new idler arm in place and start the mounting bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  8. Tighten mounting bolts to the vehicle manufacturer’s specified torque values using a torque wrench.
  9. Attach the steering linkage to the idler arm and secure the nut; torque to spec.
  10. Lower the vehicle, reinstall the wheel, and torque lug nuts to specification.
  11. Test steering operation at low speed to verify smooth movement and correct function; have front-end alignment checked if recommended or if steering pull is noticed.
