Heavy-duty idler arm engineered for classic GM A-body and full-size steering systems (1970–1981 Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac). This idler arm stabilizes and supports the steering linkage, maintaining proper alignment and reducing play in the steering box–centerlink assembly. Built to restore steering geometry and improve handling, it delivers durable service life, reliable performance, and straightforward installation for restoration or maintenance projects.
Features:
  • Fits 1970–1981 Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac models using the factory style idler arm.
  • Precision-machined joint and robust forged arm for improved steering stability and reduced play.
  • Restores correct steering geometry to reduce wandering and uneven tire wear.
  • Durable materials and protective finish resist corrosion for long service life.
  • Direct replacement design for an easy swap in restoration or maintenance applications.
  • Greaseable fitting (where applicable) for continued smooth operation and extended life.
Installation / Application:
  • Difficulty: 3/5
  • Estimated time: 45–90 minutes
Suggested Tools:
  • Floor jack and jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Socket set and ratchet
  • Combination wrenches
  • Pitman arm/idler arm puller or ball joint separator
  • Torque wrench
  • Pliers (for cotter pin)
  • Hammer
  • Grease gun (if greaseable)
  • Penetrating oil
Instructions:
  1. Park on a level surface, chock rear wheels, and loosen the front lug nuts slightly.
  2. Raise the front of the vehicle with a floor jack and secure it on jack stands. Remove the front wheels.
  3. Locate the idler arm on the passenger side frame rail connected to the centerlink/steering link.
  4. Apply penetrating oil to fasteners and cotter pin; remove cotter pin and loosen the castellated nut securing the idler arm stud to the centerlink.
  5. Use a pitman/idler arm puller or ball joint separator to separate the idler arm stud from the centerlink. Avoid striking the steering components with a hammer.
  6. Support the steering centerlink and remove the mounting bolts or nuts that secure the idler arm to the frame bracket.
  7. Remove the old idler arm and compare to the new unit to confirm fitment and orientation.
  8. Install the new idler arm into the frame bracket and loosely thread the mounting hardware. Reattach the idler arm stud to the centerlink and hand-start the castellated nut.
  9. Tighten the frame mounting hardware and torque to factory specification. Torque the idler arm stud nut to specification and insert a new cotter pin.
  10. If equipped with a grease fitting, lubricate the joint with the appropriate chassis grease.
  11. Reinstall the front wheels, lower the vehicle, torque the lug nuts to spec, and road-test. Have a professional alignment performed if steering pull or tire wear persists.
