Instructions:
- Park vehicle on a level surface, engage parking brake, and loosen front wheel lug nuts slightly.
- Raise the front of the vehicle with a floor jack and secure on jack stands. Remove the front wheel to access the steering components.
- Locate the outer tie rod end and inner tie rod. Clean the area to remove dirt and corrosion for clear access.
- Loosen the jam nut securing the outer tie rod end to the inner tie rod but do not remove it yet—count the number of turns or measure distance from a reference point to help maintain alignment.
- Remove the cotter pin (if present) and loosen the castle nut or retaining nut on the outer tie rod end. Use a tie rod end puller or pickle fork to separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.
- Unscrew the outer tie rod end from the inner tie rod. If replacing the inner left-hand tie rod as well, remove the inner tie rod by loosening its retaining hardware and sliding it out of the steering rack or linkage per vehicle-specific service steps.
- Install the new inner and/or outer tie rod ends by threading them onto the mating rod to the previously noted turn count or measured distance to approximate alignment.
- Reattach the outer tie rod end to the steering knuckle and tighten the castle nut or retaining nut to the manufacturer torque specification. Insert a new cotter pin if required.
- Tighten the jam nut against the tie rod end to lock the assembly in place. If grease fittings are present, apply chassis grease until the boot shows slight expansion.
- Reinstall the wheel and lower the vehicle. Torque the wheel lug nuts to specification.
- Because tie rod replacement can affect alignment, have a professional wheel alignment performed immediately after installation to ensure proper toe settings and tire wear prevention.
