This 1967-1972 Chevrolet / Pontiac Pitman Arm (36T spline) for power steering replaces the factory steering arm to restore precise steering geometry and safe road handling. Designed for direct-fit replacement on compatible classic Chevy and Pontiac full-size models and mid-size chassis from 1967 through 1972, it secures the steering linkage to the steering gearbox with a durable, high-strength finish. The arm reduces play and vibration, resists corrosion, and simplifies restoration projects by providing a reliable, easy-to-install solution that returns original steering feel and alignment.
Features:
  • Fitment: Direct-fit for 1967-1972 Chevrolet and Pontiac models equipped with power steering and a 36-tooth (36T) spline steering gearbox.
  • Material: Forged high-strength steel construction for long service life and resistance to bending under load.
  • Function: Connects the steering gearbox pitman shaft to the center/drag link, translating gearbox rotation into lateral steering motion.
  • Durability: Corrosion-resistant coating and robust design help prevent wear and maintain steering geometry over time.
  • Ease of Use: Machined spline and standard taper enable straightforward installation with common hand tools.
  • Restoration Ready: Ideal replacement for worn, bent, or corroded original pitman arms during chassis and steering system restorations.
Installation / Application:
  • Difficulty: 3/5
  • Estimated time: 45-90 minutes
Suggested Tools:
  • Floor jack and jack stands
  • Pitman arm puller or suitable puller
  • Socket set and wrenches
  • Torque wrench
  • Breaker bar
  • Hammer and punch
  • Penetrating oil
  • Safety glasses and gloves
Instructions:
  1. Park vehicle on level ground, set parking brake, and block rear wheels.
  2. Raise the front of the vehicle with a floor jack and secure on jack stands; remove any splash shields if needed for access.
  3. Locate the pitman arm at the lower output shaft of the steering gearbox; apply penetrating oil to the splined shaft nut and tie-rod connections and allow to soak.
  4. Remove the nut and cotter pin (if present) from the pitman arm-to-center link/drag link connection and separate the joint using a tie-rod separator or pickle fork.
  5. Loosen and remove the nut that secures the pitman arm to the gearbox output shaft. Use a pitman arm puller to extract the pitman arm from the splined shaft; avoid prying on the gearbox housing.
  6. Clean the splines and inspect the gearbox output shaft for damage or excessive wear before installing the new arm.
  7. Position the replacement pitman arm on the gearbox splines, aligning the arm to the original installed orientation (count splines if necessary for proper alignment).
  8. Install and snug the pitman arm retaining nut, then torque to the vehicle manufacturer's specified value using a torque wrench.
  9. Reconnect the center/drag link to the pitman arm, install the nut and cotter pin (if equipped), and torque to spec.
  10. Lower the vehicle, perform a steering check for correct centering and free play, and have the vehicle aligned by a professional if steering alignment is affected.
